Parashas Bamidbar and Shavuos have a common theme. The Medrash teaches us that at Sinai the Jewish People witnessed the encampment of the angels on high and they desired the same encampment. HaShem rewarded their ambition and gave them camps with flags in the Wilderness. One must wonder, however, of what relevance this is to us today? We do not wander in the Wilderness and we do not have camped flags?
The answer to this question can be found in one word that is used to describe the Revelation at Hare Sinai. The Torah states (Devarim 4:10) יוֹם אֲשֶׁר עָמַדְתָּ לִפְנֵי יְה-ֹוָ-ה אֱ-לֹהֶיךָ בְּחֹרֵב , the day that you stood before HaShem, your G-d, at Chorev. The Ramban interprets this verse to be a Biblical obligation for us to remember the Revelation of Sinai. The key word here, however, is עָמַדְתָּ, you stood. Angels are referred to as (Yeshaya 6:2) as עֹמְדִים, standing. The Torah also refers to Moshe’s stay on the mountain as עֹמֵד, standing (Devarim 5:5). The Torah does not wish that we merely nostalgically recall the day when we received the Torah. It is said (Tehillim 82:6) אֲנִי אָמַרְתִּי אֱ-לֹהִים אַתֶּם וּבְנֵי עֶלְיוֹן כֻּלְּכֶם, you are angelic, sons of the Most High are you all. The Medrash interprets this verse to be referring to the status of the Jewish People at Sinai.
The Jewish People were akin to angels, accepting the Torah before they even understood what the Torah’s directives entailed. When the Jewish People in the Wilderness desired the encampment of the angels, they were not just looking to replicate the pomp and glory of the angels. Rather, they sought the spiritual level that the angels had, and HaShem preferred the Jews with this special status Alas, we fell from that exalted level when we made the Golden Calf, but HaShem still awaits our return to that lofty plane. This Shavuos, let us embrace the Torah with all of our being, and it should be HaShem’s will to once again bestow upon us the angelic level that we once attained.
