Simcha, joy! Simple concept, right? Just be happy. Rav Shlomo Freifeld zt”l asked his Rebe Rav Yitzchak Hutner zt”l before Rav Hutner was niftar, “which path should one take to see the light?” and Rav Hutner answered, “Nur mit simcha, only with joy.” Still sounds simple. How does one have joy? In this week’s Parasha the Torah states that the curses and tragedies that will befall the Jewish People are because they did not serve HaShem with joy and good-heartedness. What is this joy? We have to posit that this joy is experienced through Torah study, mitzvah performance and seeking out HaShem. Now that’s a simple recipe for joy. Learn Torah, perform mitzvos, and come close to HaShem. People often wonder why bad things happen to good people. Here’s the answer. Sadness and despair cause destruction and tragedy. The way out of despair is through Torah study, mitzvah observance and closeness to HaShem. True simcha, joy!
Have a Happy and Joyous Shabbos!
