Like earthenware, but pure

On Rosh Hashanah we say that man is like a cheres hanishbar, a broken shard. This is interpreted simply to mean that man is worthless. We can suggest, however, that there is a positive element to this phrase. The Mishna states that when an earthenware vessel breaks, its breaking is its purification process. So too, man is like earthenware, and when his heart is broken, this is the first step to becoming pure.
